When & where is the NBA Paris Game 2023?

As you may have guessed, the NBA Paris game will be in Paris, the beautiful capital city of France. The date of the game is 19th January 2023.

The venue for the game will be the Accor Arena, one of the country's premier arenas that will be a venue for the 2023 Summer Olympics which will be held in France.

The last NBA Paris game in 2020 was played here, contested between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Charlotte Hornets. The Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Bucks came away with a 116-103 victory in that game.

Who will be playing in the NBA Paris Game 2023?

It will be an all-Eastern Conference affair as the legendary Chicago Bulls will face the Detroit Pistons.

Both sides have experienced less than ideal starts to the 2022/23 season, with the Pistons finding themselves bottom of the conference with a 3-13 record, while the Bulls are 12th in the conference with a 6-9 record.

That’s not to say this isn’t an interesting matchup though, as there is a historical rivalry between these two teams that goes back to the earlier days of the greatest of all time, Michael Jordan.

What is the history between the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons?

In the 1980s, the NBA was largely dominated by the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers, led by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the Boston Celtics, led by Larry Bird.

However, Michael Jordan, who was drafted in 1983, started to emerge as the new star of the league, and by the late 1980s, it was clear it was to be his league very soon. But first, he had to get past the current crop of league greats.

The 1987/88 season was the first season where Chicago were able to start competing. After years of MJ having to do really all the work by himself, that season he received help after the Bulls drafted Scottie Pippen. The two would go on to have a legendary partnership together.

In the playoffs of that season, the Bulls met the Pistons in the playoffs in the eastern conference semi-finals round. This series would kick off one of the league's most heated rivalries of all time.

The Pistons were already championship contenders, while the Bulls were working to get to that point. This first meeting saw the Pistons dispose of the Bulls rather easily, winning the best-of-seven series 4-1.

Detroit at the time played a very aggressive, physical style of basketball that was predominantly defence orientated. They were known as the ‘Bay Boy Pistons’, and they were fronted by three guys; Isaiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman (who would go on to play for the Bulls in the 90s).

The Pistons knew of Jordan’s dominance all too well, after “His Airness” had won that season's MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards.

The attempts to stop him led to Pistons head coach Chuck Daly instituting the ‘Jordan Rules’ - essentially it was permission for the team to stop Jordan by any means necessary.

That mentally of doing whatever it takes to win is what led to the Pistons being so successful in the turn of the century.

Chicago and Detroit would meet in the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, from 1987/88 season to the 1990/91 season. Each year, the Bulls would come back stronger and push the ‘Bad Boys’ harder than the year before.

In the 1988/89 season, the two sides met in the eastern conference finals, with the Pistons coming out on top 4-2 and would go on to win their first NBA championship.

The following season, they met again in the conference finals. Once again the Pistons were victorious, but this time only just, with Chicago pushing them to seven games. Once again, Detroit would go on to win the championship.

Then finally, in the 1990/91 season, Michael Jordan had learnt enough and was too unstoppable as the Bulls finally beat the Pistons in the conference finals with a clean sweep 4-0.

Finally beating the Pistons was the catalyst for the Bulls becoming the most dominant team in the NBA throughout the 1990s, as they went on to win three consecutive championships from 1991-1993, then again in 1996-1998.

The rivalry between the Pistons and the Bulls hasn’t reached those heights since then, but what they had at the time was a fierce battle between two legendary teams that will carry the feud on forever.

Why should you attend the NBA Paris Game 2023?

There are a number of reasons why going to the game would be a worthwhile occasion.

The first and most obvious one is that it is a unique experience. The NBA only comes to Europe once during the regular season, so it is a rare occasion that you should want to take advantage of.

Another obvious reason is for what was described before - this isn't just two teams going at it. These are two historical rivals.

Regardless of the lack of animosity between the two sides these days, there is still the history there and its a matchup that commands respect every time they play.

But the biggest reason is to see the superstars on display. Like the first point, it is a rare occasion to simply see an NBA game in Europe. But when you think of the players involved, it makes it even better.

DeMar DeRozan is a bona-fide star in the league. He is a five-time all-star and a two-time All-NBA second team player. He is a fantastic player who loves the game, it would be an honour to witness him play live.

Zach LaVine is one of the most electric players in the league. The high-flyer is known for his dunking ability, having won two dunk contests during NBA All-Star weekend. However, he has also expanded his game and has become a more complete player who is a big benefit to the team.

Lonzo Ball may not be the best Ball brother, with his younger sibling LaMelo doing good things with the Charlotte Hornets, but he is a joy to watch as well. His passing IQ pairs well with the skillset of DeRozan and athletic ability of LaVine, highlight reel-level plays are very common with the Bulls.

On the Pistons, they are a team with many young players who are looking to build back up to become a big game team once again.

One player helping them doing exactly that is Cade Cunningham. The first pick of the 2021 NBA draft is in his sophomore season after coming off an All-Rookie first team appearance in his first season, which saw him develop. He is sure to continue that development and become a solid player in the league one day.
