The British and Irish Lions have announced they will face Japan for the first time in a one-off Test-match at Murrayfield Stadium, the home of Scottish Rugby.

Both sides will compete in Edinburgh for the Vodafone 1888 Cup, named after the first year the Lions touring team visited Australia and New Zealand.  

The Test-match will take place ahead of the Lions South Africa series this summer. The warm-up match will proceed with three Test series against Rugby World Cup champions, the Springboks.

"One of our objectives is to give Warren (Gatland) and the playing squad as much meaningful preparation as possible before departing on Tour, so we are delighted to have agreed this fixture," said Ben Calveley, managing director of the British and Irish Lions via Sky Sports.

Like many others, Scottish Rugby has been hard hit by the absence of fans and the Autumn Internationals. The fixture will also provide the club with an essential financial uplift.

In regards to Lions fans, Calveley said:  “A Lions Test is one of the most iconic events in world sport, but a huge number of fans from the home nations never get the chance to see one live. The Vodafone Lions 1888 Cup match will give even more supporters the opportunity to be part of the next chapter in Lions history.

The Lions will face the Brave Blossoms on Saturday 26th June 2021. Kick-off is currently TBC.
