Jaguars vs Falcons History

The Jaguars and the Falcons have not met many times in the past - only eight meetings in all since the Jags were formed in 1993.

This is purely down to the fact that they are in separate conferences (Jags in the AFC, Falcons in the NFC). Every team will not play that many games a season against teams from the other conference. They mainly play against others within their division and conference.

After the Jags were formed in 1993, it took three years before these two met for the first time, with Jacksonville beating the Falcons 19-17 in December 1996.

They last played each other in November 2021 when the Falcon won their fourth victory over the Jags in a row, winning 21-14.

In fact, the Falcons enjoy a positive record over Jacksonville, winning five of the eight games to the Jags’ three.

Game Analysis and Score Prediction

Jaguars vs Falcons could be an interesting matchup between two sides who are rather unfamiliar with each other. They have had some interesting matchups in the past and that has led to a favourable rare fixture when it does come around.

In terms of where these two sides are at and who is most likely to take the win, Jacksonville are definitely heavy favourites looking at the game way ahead of the season.

The Jags currently sit in 8th on the NFL’s power rankings after falling one place following the draft. The Falcons are further down in 23rd place but did make up four places after what is seen as a good draft for them.

It could all be a different story come the start of the season, however, as the power rankings don’t tell a full story, especially when the season isn’t anywhere near starting as of writing.

That being said, it seems likely that the Jags will pick up the win based on team performances from last season.

Jacksonville finished with a 9-8 record and made the AFC Divisional Round in the playoffs, while the Falcons went 7-10 in the regular season, finishing bottom of the NFC South division (although to be fair, the whole division wasn’t great as three of the four teams had 7-10 records).

The Jags are seen to be on the way up and could be outside Super Bowl contenders for next season. On the other side, the Falcons have some work to do before they are at a point to start competing.

However, they could be the top team in their division, and with a good start to the season, they may just put up a good fight.

With that, we are going to say that the Jaguars will still earn the victory, winning with a score of 24-13.

Key Players for Both Sides

The Jaguars are seen to be on the up and a big reason for that is their franchise star and 2021 number-one draft pick, Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence was a highly-touted college football prospect when he entered the draft after winning the national championship with Clemson in his freshman year.

He was selected first overall in the 2021 NFL draft, and after a fairly lacklustre rookie season, he had a strong second year, leading the team to the playoffs and looking very competent in the process.

Many critics and analysts believe Lawrence to be a strong force in the league in the near future, up there as one of the best in the league alongside Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts.

On the other side, the Falcons used two different QB’s last season, starting with Marcus Mariota and finishing with rookie Desmond Ridder after benching Mariota for the final four games of the season.

Ridder, having warmed the bench up until given his chance, grew into the opportunity week after week. Heading into his second season, he is likely to get the starting role this time and could potentially grow into a solid enough player.

The Falcons do have some assets that could be a good help to them this season, including former Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell, who in his prime was one of the best in the league in his position. However, at 36 years old, it's unlikely he will have as big an impact anymore.

They also have a lot of faith that their eighth overall draft pick Bijan Robinson, a running back from the University of Texas, will bring something special to their offense.

In Jacksonville, Lawrence has a lot of solid options to be throwing to this season. The acquisition of second-team all-pro wide receiver Calvin Ridley is sure to be a good pick-up and will partner well with fellow receiver Christian Kirk, who had a career year last season.

He also has Evan Engram, a former pro bow tight end who is very competent with catching and blocking, and their second-round draft pick in the 2023 draft Brenton Strange, another tight end who has a similar skillset to Engram and is sure to take over from him when Engram potentially leaves in 2024.
