About alt-J

alt-J formed in Leeds in 2007 after Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton, Thom Sonny Green and former member Gwil Sainsbury met while studying at university. The group developed an unconventional approach to alternative music that combines indie rock, electronic textures, folk influences and layered vocal arrangements.

Their debut album, An Awesome Wave, arrived in 2012 and won the Mercury Prize. It features songs including ‘Breezeblocks’, ‘Tessellate’, ‘Fitzpleasure’, ‘Matilda’ and ‘Taro’ and established alt-J as one of the most distinctive British bands of their generation.

The band followed it with the chart-topping This Is All Yours in 2014, featuring ‘Left Hand Free’, ‘Every Other Freckle’ and ‘Hunger of the Pine’. RELAXER arrived in 2017 before alt-J returned with their fourth studio album, The Dream, in 2022. The Dream remains alt-J’s most recent studio album.
