About SBTV20

SBTV20 celebrates two decades of SBTV, the influential British music platform founded by Jamal Edwards MBE. After receiving a video camera for Christmas at the age of 15, Edwards began filming local artists performing freestyle sessions in west London. The first videos appeared on his YouTube channel in 2007 under the name SBTV, inspired by his MC alias, Smokey Barz.

At a time when grime was largely heard through pirate radio and independent DVDs, SBTV gave emerging British artists a direct route to a growing online audience. Its raw performance videos and interviews documented the scene as it developed, helping artists including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Dave, Skepta, Jessie J, Lady Leshurr and Mist reach new listeners.

SBTV later became an established media platform, curating festival stages and taking its coverage from the estates of west London to Downing Street. Jamal Edwards received an MBE for services to music in 2015 at the age of 24. SBTV20 brings that story to The O2 for a major celebration of his legacy and the culture he championed.
