Since gaining recognition from BBC Radio in 2017, Sam Fender has risen through the ranks of the indie rock scene and is now one of the best-loved musicians on the roster.

With headline sets at Reading and Leeds Festival, a giant homecoming weekend at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, and support slots with rock behemoths such as The Rolling Stones and The Killers under his belt, Sam Fender is sure to be one of the most in-demand artists in the UK next time he hits the road.

Now, many fans are wondering when they can expect to see Fender on a full-scale tour performing modern classics such as ‘Seventeen Going Under’, which was voted No.1 in Radio X’s ‘Best of British’ in 2022 – the radio station’s annual poll for the all-time greatest song by a British musician.

Is Sam Fender releasing new music?

Sam Fender has released two studio albums and one live album since 2019 and looks to be gearing up to release his third album in 2024.

In 2023, Fender played two huge sell-out homecoming shows at Newcastle’s St James’ Park, where Fender ran a cryptic advertising campaign for his third album.

Billboards outside the stadium showed Newcastle FC shirts for his first two albums, ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ and ‘Seventeen Going Under’ with the numbers 1 and 2 on each shirt respectively.

A third shirt with the number 3 had a QR code, which took fans to a page on Fender’s official webstore to pre-order a limited ‘Newcastle Edition’ of his forthcoming as-yet-untitled third album, scheduled to release in 2024.

It looks safe to say that the follow-up to his first two number 1 albums is right around the corner!

While fans eagerly await the release of the Fender's upcoming record, he has treated them to a new track. The Geordie singer-songwriter has teamed up with American folk-pop star Noah Kahan for a fresh rendition of Kahan's track, 'Homesick'.

The song was originally included in Kahan's 2022 album 'Stick Season', which he has been reimaging with a series of collaboration with his favourite artists.

In a recent article for Far Out magazine, journalist Joe Taysom explains that '‘Homesick’ finds Kahan and Fender reflecting on growing up in their respective hometowns of Vermont and Newcastle, finding common ground despite their geographical differences.'

Meanwhile, Fender said: “I was told Noah wanted us to work together, and I’d heard the tune ‘Homesick’ and thought it was a lush song. We then spoke on the phone and immediately hit it off. I loved the idea of the song being a transatlantic call-and-response between two young kids desperate to escape their hometowns. The ‘running away’ theme has been done to death by myself, and many other artists over the last 50 years, but it’s relatable.”

When did Sam Fender last tour?

Fender last played live in August 2023, with his final performances coming as headline slots at the iconic Reading and Leeds Festivals.

Fender only played a handful of shows in 2023 – 16 to be exact – with the bulk of his shows to promote his second studio album ‘Seventeen Going Under’.

On the main ‘Seventeen Going Under’ tour, Fender hit many of the UK’s major arenas, including Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, London’s OVO Arena Wembley, and a hometown show at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena.

However, with over 100,000 tickets sold across two nights at St James’ Park, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to believe Fender could announce stadium shows to support his third album.

Who was on stage with Sam Fender at St James Park?

Last summer, Sam Fender treated his hometown crowd to an unforgettable homecoming show at St James' Park. As an incredible surprise, he invited none other than AC/DC's iconic frontman, Brian Johnson, to join him on stage for the second of his two shows.

One of the standout moments of the evening was their renditions of AC/DC's greatest hits, 'Back In Black' and 'You Shook Me All Night Long'.

It was a remarkable collaboration that showcased the immense talent between these local legends. The night was a celebration of hometown heroes, as Sam Fender and Brian Johnson shared the stage, delivering a performance that will be remembered as a testament to the enduring power of rock and the spirit of their beloved Newcastle.
