Bayern Munich This Season

This season, Bayern Munich have been slightly off their pace compared to what they are known for doing in the Bundesliga. That is to say, they are one point off Borussia Dortmund at the top, having lost just three times but with 15 wins and seven draws.

The last 10 years or so have seen them completely dominating, making light work of the league and storming to the title.

Because of this, strong reports suggest that manager Julian Naggelsman will be sacked, with former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel taking over for the rest of the season.

This may spell danger for every other side left in the Champions League, as the last time Tuchel was appointed manager of a team halfway through their season was Chelsea in the 2020/21 season - the year they went on to win the competition.

Bayern in the Champions League this year have been fairly unstoppable. They are yet to lose a game, going perfectly through the group stage before dispatching French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the Round of 16.

Man City This Season

In the same vein, Man City aren’t currently meeting the same standards we all know they are capable of this season. They sit second in the Premier League, eight points behind Arsenal on top.

But by no means does that say they are out of the running. English football fans are all too familiar with second-half-season Man City and their ability to turn their level of play up another notch somehow to become completely unplayable.

Their Champions League campaign saw them ease through the group stage, with four wins and two draws. The Round of 16 proved a bit trickier in the first leg.

Up against another German opposition, that time RB Leipzig, they drew the first game in Leipzig 1-1. However, the second leg showed why City are favourites to win the Champions League, as they demolished Leipzig 7-0 in Manchester, with five goals coming from star striker Erling Haaland.

Man City vs Bayern Munich Head-to-Head

Man City and Bayern Munich have only met six times in official competitions, all coming in the Champions League, each in the group stage of that year’s competition.

They share the series, with both sides taking three wins each. Most games feature two or more goals, showing why it's a big draw fixture.

Bayern has a slight advantage on goals, scoring 10 goals to City’s nine. The top scorer, though, is City’s all-time top scorer Sergio Aguero with three goals, all of which came in their last meeting.

Past Man City vs Bayern Munich Matches

Bayern Munich 2-0 Man City – 27th September 2011

The two sides’ first meeting in the Champions League saw Bayern run out as winners in Munich with two goals from Mario Gomez.

Man City 2-0 Bayern Munich – 7th December 2011

The second time round, this time in Manchester, the home side got the better of their German opposition, with goals from David Silva and Yaya Toure. Unfortunately, the result wasn’t enough to see City through to the knockout stage.

Man City 1-3 Bayern Munich – 2nd October 2013

Pep Guardiola was in the dugout for this game, but on the side of the reigning Champions League winners, Bayern.

His team came away with a convincing win in Manchester, thanks to goals from Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben, with Alvaro Negredo picking up a consolation goal for City.

Bayern Munich 2-3 Man City – 10th December 2013

City got revenge for their previous loss at home, beating Bayern in Munich after being 2-0 down after 12 minutes. Goals from Silva, Aleksandar Kolarov and James Milner cancelled out Muller and Mario Gotze’s early efforts as both teams progressed to the next stage.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Man City – 17th September 2014

The two sides were drawn in the same group again in the next campaign. The first match in Munich was tight, with a stoppage-time goal from Jerome Boateng securing the win for Bayern.

Man City 3-2 Bayern Munich – 25th November 2014

The reverse fixture was a Sergio Aguero masterclass, with the Argentinian bagging a hattrick to take the win for City.

City scored first before Bayern scored twice before halftime through Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski. It wasn’t until late in the game that Aguero scored his other two goals, which proved vital as City just scrapped through into the next round with the win.

Man City vs Bayern Munich Line-up Predictions

Both sides boast some of the best players in world football. Manuel Neuer may not be in goal for Bayern, on account of a heavy broken leg he suffered in a skiing accident. But Bayern made sure to get good cover for him, taking in Swiss stopper Yann Sommer in January.

Man City acquired one of the best goalscorers in world football over the summer, bringing in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. He has proven to be everything promised and more, scoring 42 goals in all competitions, including a competition-high 10 in the Champions League.

The maestro pulling the strings on the City side is Kevin De Bruyne, one of the world’s greatest players currently.

On Bayern’s side, they actually have two former Man City players in winger Leroy Sane and wing-back Joao Cancelo, who only left in January (although supposedly not on the best terms).

Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane is a new signing for them, too, and is proving that he is capable of performing everywhere he goes.

But the German trio of Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka is the key factor in the side. Their connection is evident in every game and is pivotal to Bayerns success.

Here is what we think will be the lineups for both sides should all players be fit:

Man City: 4-2-3-1 formation

Goalkeeper: Ederson

Left Back: Nathan Ake

Centre Back: Ruben Dias

Centre Back: Manuel Akanji

Right Back: Kyle Walker

Defensive Midfielder: Rodri

Defensive Midfielder: Ilkay Gundogan

Winger: Phil Foden

Attacking Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne

Centre Back: Dayot Upamecano

Centre Back: Matthijs de Ligt

Right Back: Joao Cancelo

Defensive Midfielder: Joshua Kimmich
