10. ‘Pointless’
Streams: 176,630,458
‘Pointless’ is a classic love ballad, where Capaldi lists all the things he does for his partner and all the reasons he loves her. Unsurprisingly the song was co-written by Ed Sheeran, the king of wedding songs, which is exactly the future Capaldi envisioned for ‘Pointless.’
In his usual sarcastic style, Capaldi said in an interview for Big Issue: “Listen, we’ve got a song like Someone You Loved, which gets played at funerals. And it’d be nice to have a song like Pointless that gets played at weddings. Basically it’s a cash grab.”
9. ‘One’
Streams: 178,446,132
From his 2019 debut album, ‘One’ is Capaldi being thankful to the one who let his partner get away, as it led her to him. He says “I guess somebody else's loss is another's gain,” showing that even though she had to go through heartbreak, he can save her with his unconditional love.
8. ‘Wish You The Best’
Streams: 341,132,865
‘Wish You The Best’ shows Capaldi’s domination of the charts, as the third single from his 2023 album debuted atop the UK Singles Chart, his fifth number one overall. This song is more of a breakup ballad, acknowledging the pain and sadness of heartbreak but ultimately wishing his ex the best and accepting what happened.
The music video for the song is also poignant, telling the story of a dog that visits its owner’s grave 14 years after his death. But Capaldi rarely takes himself too seriously, and when fans posted their reactions to the music video on TikTok, Capaldi responded by laughing at people who were crying.
7. ‘Grace’
Streams: 346,479,323
The music video for ‘Grace’ is another example of Capaldi’s sarcastic and ironic humour, even despite the emotional and heartfelt topics in his songs. He performs on a pole at a gentleman’s club, showing his self-deprecating sense of humour against the backdrop of a song about a love that alters your life and makes you see things in a whole new way.
6. ‘Forever’
Stream: 378,675,809
‘Forever’ is just the kind of emotional ballad we can expect from Lewis Capaldi, his descriptions of love and heartbreak always ringing true. In this song he sings about meeting a past lover again after a long time and reminiscing on the relationship. Despite the pain of drifting apart, he has no regrets and reminds her “nobody said that it would last forever / That doesn't mean we didn't try to get there.”
5. ‘Forget Me’
Streams: 411,152,716
The lead single of Capaldi’s second album, Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent, it of course debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart. It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 2023 Brit Awards, and fans were very eager to hear the first offering in nearly three years. With 80s synth inspired production, the song provided someone new and exciting for his audience.
Once again, Capaldi made a hilarious music video to go along with the song, which was filmed at the same hotel in Ibiza as Wham!’s ‘Club Tropicana.’
4. ‘Hold Me While You Wait’
Streams: 909,732,527
Released alongside his debut album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, ‘Hold Me While You Wait’ is another “wonderfully depressing” hit according to Idolator. It followed the massive success of ‘Someone You Loved,’ and is one of his most emotionally intense and relatable songs. It’s about loving someone who isn’t sure if they love you back, wishing that they’d fully commit to you and not feeling good enough.
3. ‘Bruises’
Streams: 1,292,600,912
‘Bruises’ is Lewis Capaldi’s debut single, originally self-released in 2017, and the fact that it is his second most-streamed song shows how it has stood the test of time. As always it is emotionally raw and personal, detailing reminiscing about a past relationship through rose-coloured glasses and forgetting why you broke up in the first place.
2. ‘Before You Go’
Streams: 2,220,188,626
Capaldi revealed that ‘Before You Go’ was one of the most personal songs he’s ever written, and it is certainly one of the most harrowing. The song deals with the aftermath of suicide, inspired by the events of Capaldi’s aunt’s suicide when he was a child. Perhaps the moving and important topic of the song is what has made it so popular, as Capaldi speaks about an issue that is so close to a lot of people’s hearts.
1. ‘Someone You Loved’
Streams: 3,952,088,215
The success Lewis Capaldi achieved with ‘Someone You Loved’ was truly life-changing for him, propelling him into public consciousness and making him one of the biggest new artists in the UK. It peaked at the top of the UK Singles Chart, spending seven consecutive weeks there, and was even nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammys.
Lyrically, the song is about the end of a relationship, but in an interview with NME, Capaldi mentioned “there were a couple of bereavements in my family and stuff like that, and I wanted to write a song that could be applicable to both my relationship ending, which I was writing a lot about, and then this bereavement thing.”
