What happened in the Royal London Cup last year?

In 2021, Lancashire had success in the first half of the cup beating Sussex by 2 wickets, Gloucestershire by 6 wickets, and Hampshire by 51 runs.

Following on from their wins, Lancashire lost to Middlesex by 6 runs, Durham by 87 runs, and their match against Worcestershire was abandoned due to weather before they concluded with a draw against Essex.

While their first-half performance was impressive and set them up for success, Lancashire finished in fourth place in Group A and just missed out on progressing to the quarter-finals, having been beaten to the post by Gloucestershire, Essex, and Durham.

This year, the team and Head coach Glen Chapple will be out to redeem themselves and progress into the next stage of the competition.

Who’s new to the Lancashire County Cricket team?

  • Aggressive opening right-hand batsman Phil Salt signed with the team in November
  • Lancashire’s most recent signing is the impressive international all-rounder Washington Sundar, who brings his incredible left hand bat and right arm off-spin skills to the team

Which Lancashire Cricket players will be at the Royal London Cup?

While Lancashire haven’t confirmed their official line-up for the Royal London Cup, we predict which players will be representing them for the club competition.

It is likely that England’s new white ball captain Jos Butler, as well as Liam Livingstone, and rising-star Phil Salt will be called up for England fixtures this season and may not be supporting Lancashire at the One Day Cup.

Bowlers and England white ball players Luke Wood and Richard Gleeson were recently called up to the England squad and will not be appearing in the Royal London Cup. Matt Parkinson is also pushing for international selection but is not yet confirmed.

While Lancashire will have lost some incredible players to the England Cricket season, they are guaranteed to deliver a solid team of both experienced senior players and upcoming youngsters to the field at the Royal London Cup.

We predict that Dane Villas, Keaton Jennings, and Steven Croft will bring their wealth of experience, while George Balderson, Tom Hartley, Washington Sundar, and Jack Blatherwick will bring a fresher approach, resulting in a tremendous dynamic of play within the team.

What can we expect from Lancashire in the Royal London Cup?

This season, the team set out to follow Captain Dane Villas’ attitude of taking the positives from their last campaign onto the field this year.

The Lancashire squad undertook intense pre-season training in the heat of Dubai in hope that they would hit the ground running in 2022, and we must say that this has paid off as the team have reached third position in Division 1 of the County Championship.

We expect the club’s performance to continue to flourish during the Royal London Cup as they find themselves in prime position with a team made up of great talent, or as Chapple put it, “young players challenging for international call-ups, and senior players who are still at the top of their game”.

Spurred on by their success so far and with a strong team set to go, Lancashire will be a force to be reckoned with!
