alt-J have been away from the touring circuit for several years, leaving fans wondering when the Mercury Prize-winning band could return to the stage.

There are currently no alt-J concerts confirmed for 2027. The band’s official tour page does not list any upcoming performances - however, there is reason for fans to keep looking ahead. Frontman Joe Newman has been pursuing his solo project JJerome87 in 2026, but has made clear that this chapter does not represent the end of alt-J. Speaking to ABC Audio in June 2026, Newman said there is no new alt-J music currently in development, but added: "There will be an album in the future."

Are alt-J touring in 2027?

At the time of writing, alt-J have not announced a 2027 UK tour. There are no forthcoming dates listed on the band's official tour page, while major ticketing platforms currently show no upcoming alt-J concerts.

Any suggested 2027 dates or venues should therefore be treated as speculation unless confirmed by alt-J through their official channels. However, there are hints of a revival: Newman described the group's current situation as a "healthy break" in a June 2026 interview with Corriere della Sera, saying that alt-J still exist and will return, although he did not know when.

This leaves the door open to future music and live performances – even if there is currently no indication that these will arrive specifically in 2027.

Why have alt-J been away?

alt-J released their fourth studio album, The Dream, in 2022 and subsequently toured the record.

Their most recent concerts listed by Songkick took place in 2023, including shows celebrating the 10th anniversary of their acclaimed debut album, An Awesome Wave.

Newman's debut solo album, The Canyon, received its wider release in June 2026. Newman explained that the project emerged after he continued writing following The Dream, with becoming a father inspiring increasingly personal material that he felt suited a project outside alt-J.

The move does not appear to represent a permanent departure from the band - alongside confirming that he expects another alt-J album in the future, Newman has spoken about his solo work as time away from the group rather than its conclusion.

Could alt-J return in 2027?

A 2027 comeback is possible, but there is not currently enough information to suggest that it is planned.

Newman's comments provide the clearest indication of alt-J's longer-term future. While promoting The Canyon in 2026, he confirmed that another alt-J album is expected eventually, although he gave no release date or timetable for the band's return.

His immediate focus may remain elsewhere. In a July 2026 interview with Dork, Newman said he hoped to continue writing and touring his solo material and suggested he might write another JJerome87 album. The timing of alt-J's next chapter is, as a result, ultimately difficult to predict.

Should the trio reunite in the studio and begin another album cycle, however, a return to live performance would be a natural prospect. Whether that happens during 2027 or later remains to be seen.

What could a new alt-J tour look like?

Without an announcement, potential venues and dates remain entirely speculative. alt-J nevertheless have considerable experience of performing at major UK venues and festivals. Their previous touring history includes a headline performance at The O2 in London, alongside extensive international touring.

Their eventual return could therefore take several forms: a new album could support a conventional UK arena or theatre tour, while selected festival appearances could offer another route back to the stage. The band have also demonstrated an appetite for anniversary performances, having toured An Awesome Wave in full during 2023.

Until alt-J make an official announcement, however, specific venues should not be considered likely or confirmed.

What could alt-J play on a future tour?

A future tour would give alt-J five eras of their career to draw from if it accompanied a new studio album.

Their debut, An Awesome Wave, established the band's distinctive approach and won the 2012 Mercury Prize. It includes enduring tracks such as ‘Breezeblocks’, ‘Tessellate’ and ‘Fitzpleasure’.

This Is All Yours followed in 2014 and reached number one in the UK, adding ‘Left Hand Free’ and ‘Every Other Freckle’ to their catalogue. RELAXER arrived in 2017 before The Dream became their fourth studio record in 2022.

That leaves considerable scope for a future setlist spanning the band's career alongside any new material.
