BMW PGA Championship 2024 Dates & Players

The BMW PGA Championship is one of the biggest events on the DP World Tour schedule. As well as being part of the Rolex Series, the tournament is the tour’s designated ‘Premier event’ for the purposes of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), with a minimum of 64 ranking points available to the champion.

BMW PGA Championship History

The BMW PGA Championship is one of the most prestigious golfing tournaments on British soil, with a history dating back to 1955. It is not to be confused with the US PGA Championship which is one of the four majors and is held in the US.

Originally, it wasn’t part of the European Tour. It was this way from the first edition in 1955 and until 1971, after which it was added to the tour.

It then became a flagship event in 1990, then was added to the Rolex Series when that was launched in 2017.

Before being added to the tour, the BMW PGA Championship didn’t have one permanent home like it does now. It moved around, playing at some iconic courses such as Royal Birkdale.

After being added, the first three years saw it played at its current home, the Wentworth Club. However, it moved again several times from 1975-1983, playing at some of the UK’s best golf courses, such as St Andrews, Royal St George’s, and back to Royal Birkdale.

The Championship has gone through various different names over the years due to changes in sponsorship. Current sponsor BMW first took over in 2005 in its first two years of the partnership, the tournament was simply named the BMW Championship.

Several legends of golf have won at the BMW PGA Championship. As already mentioned, Arnold Palmer is a former champion. Joining him with their name engraved on the trophy is; Sir Nick Faldo, who has a competition record of four titles, Bernhard Langer with three titles, and Seve Ballesteros with two titles.

Colin Montgomerie holds the distinction of being the only player in competition history to win three straight titles, winning in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Some of the UK’s biggest talents have been crowned champions, including Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, and Luke Donald, who won two titles in 2011 & 2012).

Before the introduction of the Race to Dubai and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship which is worth $10 million, the BMW PGA Championship was the most lucrative event on the tour.

Now part of the Rolex Series, the prize fund for the tournament from 2023 going forward will be $9 million.

Wentworth Club

Wentworth Golf Club is a prestigious golf course located in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. It was developed in 1912 by builder W.G. Tarrant, who commissioned famed golf course architect Harry Colt to design and develop the course. It was established 10 years later in 1922.

The course has undergone several changes over the years, including a redesign by legendary golfer, Ernie Els, from 2005-2017. The course is renowned for its immaculate greens, challenging bunkers, and scenic views.

The club boasts three championship courses: the West Course, the East Course, and the Edinburgh Course. It also boasts a nine-hole course known as the Executive Course.

The West Course is the most famous and prestigious of the three, hosting the annual BMW PGA Championship since 1984. It also hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup.

The Wentworth Club is also the headquarters of the PGA European Tour, which explains why their Premier event is held at the club every year.
