About Wembley Stadium

Wembley has been the home of English football and a major sporting and cultural venue since it was built in 1923.

Originally known as the Empire Stadium, it was built for the British Empire Exhibition and was intended to be demolished after the exhibition. However, its popularity as a sporting venue ensured its survival, and it has since undergone numerous renovations and refurbishments to become the impressive stadium that it is today.

Wembley Stadium has a seating capacity of 90,000, making it the second-largest stadium in Europe and the largest in the UK.

It has hosted some of the most significant sporting events in history, including the 1948 Summer Olympics, the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final, and the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The stadium underwent a massive renovation between 2003 and 2007, at a cost of £798 million, which resulted in a modern, state-of-the-art facility.

Two of the most distinctive features of the new stadium are the arch running overhead and its partially retractable roof, which can be closed in just 30 minutes, providing shelter to fans and players alike.

The arch's purpose is not only to be rather aesthetically pleasing but to provide structural support for the roof.

The roof has also allowed Wembley to host events such as boxing matches and concerts that were previously impossible due to weather concerns.

Wembley Stadium has played host to a number of historic events, none less than the 1966 World Cup Final which saw the host nation England win their first and to date only World Cup, and the first ever FA Cup Final in 1923.

Often referred to as the ‘White Horse Final’, the match between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United was chaos, but not for the action on the pitch.

The newly-opened Wembley Stadium at the time had a capacity of 125,000. Come the day of the match, official numbers had exceeded that, coming in at 126,047. However, a flood of people before the match saw chaotic scenes. People packed into the stands, overflowing the terraces, resulting in spectators standing in the area around the pitch, and even on it at some points.

The name ‘White Horse Final’ came about as the iconic images of mounted police officers, with one in particular on a grey horse, herding people and clearing the crowds. It was estimated that around 300,000 spectators had managed to get into the stadium that day.

In addition to football and music events, Wembley has also hosted other major events, such as the NFL London Games, which began in 2007 and have seen some of the biggest American football teams play in the stadium.

Football Finals at Wembley Stadium

As the home of English football, Wembley Stadium hosts all the major cup finals from the various levels of the FA system.

The FA Cup is undeniably the biggest cup final to happen every season, with the two semi-finals and the final taking place at Wembley. As mentioned earlier, the first FA Cup final held at Wembley was in 1923.

On the weekend before the start of the Premier League season, the Community Shield, a match played between the reigning league champions and FA Cup winners, is contested at the stadium.

The Carabao Cup is the first piece of silverware available each year. The final takes place at the beginning of February, with only the last game of the competition played at Wembley.

The EFL play-off finals for the Championship, League One, League Two, and National League are also contested here.

Multiple other cup finals are played at Wembley, such as:
