March Madness Final Four Dates 2025

4th - 6th April - San Antonio

About March Madness

March Madness is a term used to describe the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) men's and women's college basketball tournaments held annually in March and April of each year. The term was first coined by Henry V. Porter in 1939 to describe a high school basketball tournament. The tournament format consists of 68 teams in the men's tournament, and 64 teams in the women's tournament, competing in a single-elimination bracket. The tournaments are known for their unpredictability due to the larger number of teams, upsets, and the one-and-done nature of the competition, which requires the teams to win their game or be eliminated from the tournament. The Final Four, the last remaining teams in the tournaments, compete for the national championship trophy and title.

Selection Process

The selection process for the NCAA basketball tournaments involves the NCAA Selection Committee choosing the teams that participate in the tournament. For the men's tournament, the committee uses various criteria, including team records, strength of schedule, and quality wins, to determine the 36 at-large teams that join the 32 automatic qualifiers (teams that win their respective conference tournaments). The women's tournament follows a similar process.

Seeding and Bracket

Once the teams are selected, they are seeded and placed in a bracket, which outlines the path each team must take to reach the Final Four. The top four teams in each region receive the top seeds (1 through 4), and the subsequent teams are seeded accordingly. The tournament is organized in such a way that lower-seeded teams face higher-seeded teams in each round, creating the potential for upsets and Cinderella stories.

Upsets and Cinderella Teams

One of the most exciting aspects of March Madness is the possibility of upsets, where lower-seeded teams defeat higher-seeded teams. These upsets can create memorable moments and underdog stories that capture the attention of fans nationwide. Teams that exceed expectations and make unexpected deep runs in the tournament are often referred to as "Cinderella teams."

The Final Four

The Final Four is the stage of the tournament where the last four teams remaining in each respective tournament compete for a spot in the championship game. This semifinal round is held in a predetermined location and attracts significant attention and fanfare. The winners of the Final Four games advance to the championship game, where they compete for the national title.

Passion and Fandom

The NCAA basketball tournaments generate a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and passion among fans. People across the country fill out brackets, make predictions, and engage in friendly office or online pools to compete against others in predicting the outcomes of the tournament. The competitive spirit, drama, and unpredictability of March Madness make it a beloved and highly anticipated event in the sports calendar.
