Formed in 1968 as Birmingham City Ladies Football Club, later renamed Birmingham City Women's Football Club, the team initially played local friendly matches until joining the Heart of England League in 1970. The club underwent a significant restructure in 1973, becoming the West Midland Regional League in 1974, achieving success in the 1970s and 1980s with five league titles.
Facing challenges in the 1990s, the club established an academy to foster young talent. Promoted to higher leagues, including the FA Women's Premier League, in 1998, Birmingham experienced notable successes. The early 2000s saw high-profile signings like Rachel Yankey and Alex Scott, contributing to a fourth-place finish in 2004/05.
Notable achievements include winning the Birmingham FA County Cup eight times, clinching the Women's FA Cup in 2012, and reaching the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-finals in 2014. The club's integration into the FA Women's Super League in 2011 marked a new era, with close misses for the league title and Continental Cup in the same season.
Under a new era in 2017, the club played in their second Women's FA Cup final, saw managerial changes, and secured top-flight status in the 2020/21 season. The recent appointment of Darren Carter as Head Coach, along with former player Jo Potter as Assistant Head Coach, signals optimism for the future.
Despite narrowly missing promotion, the team ended the 2022 season on a seven-game winning streak. A significant development in 2023 included the appointment of former England Manager Hope Powell CBE as Women's Technical Director after the club's takeover, with Emily Simpkins returning as Assistant Head Coach.
