Formed in April 2003 amid Welsh regionalisation, the Newport‑based side, initially known as Newport Gwent Dragons, quickly claimed third place in the inaugural Celtic League under Mike Ruddock. Coached by Paul Turner from 2005, they reached the European Challenge Cup semi‑final in 2007. Darren Edwards guided them to an Anglo‑Welsh Cup semi‑final in 2011, and in 2015 they triumphed in the Welsh Premiership 7s and at the Twickenham Stoop. In mid‑2017, the WRU took ownership and rebranded them simply as Dragons. A 2022 rebrand added “RFC” to re‑emphasise club identity, and in June 2023 a private consortium led by David Buttress and David Wright purchased both Panthers and Rodney Parade.
