The Chelsea Flower Show has existed since 1913, under the name of the ‘Great Spring Show’ and was first held in just a single marquee in London's Chelsea.
Despite the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the show went ahead in 1915. However, as the strains of the war increased and conscription demanded more men for the war effort, the show was cancelled in 1916. Following WWI, the show continued due to its educational benefit, and over the years the number of tents at the show grew to include other displays such as pictures, scientific exhibits and displays of garden design.
Again, the outbreak of the Second World War halted the Chelsea Flower Show. But, by 1945 the show returned and was hailed as a triumph. As the decades passed, the Chelsea Flower Show established itself as a staple on the London calendar and even secured Queen Elizabeth II as its royal patron.
Now, the Chelsea Flower Show has existed for over 100 years, and has earned itself the title of the premier event in horticulture. If you are hoping to enjoy a fun spring day out in London or are a horticulture enthusiast, this historical and stunning event is not one to be missed!
