About Les Misérables

Les Misérables is a popular musical set in early 19th-century France, based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. The story follows the journey of Jean Valjean, a French peasant who seeks redemption after being released from jail in 1815. Valjean served nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving child.

Throughout the musical, the audience experiences Valjean's transformation as he navigates the challenges of society, encounters various characters, and grapples with the aftermath of his past actions. The themes of love, sacrifice, and social injustice are central to the narrative, making it a compelling and emotionally charged production.

One notable aspect of the musical is its powerful and emotionally captivating music. With music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer, Les Misérables features iconic songs such as 'I Dreamed a Dream', 'One Day More', and 'Do You Hear the People Sing?'.

Les Misérables has received widespread acclaim since its premiere in 1980, and it has been successfully adapted for film and the stage, including a long-running production in London's West End. The musical has garnered numerous awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1987.

The musical is divided into two acts that depict different periods in French history. The first act takes place in 1815 and follows Jean Valjean's journey from a prisoner to a respected factory owner, while the second act is set during the June Rebellion of 1832, in which the characters fight for their ideals and beliefs.

Les Misérables features a wide range of memorable characters, including the determined police inspector Javert, the young and idealistic revolutionary Marius Pontmercy, the brave and self-sacrificing Eponine, and the tragic heroine Fantine.
