Competitors to watch
Luke Littler – the unstoppable “Nuke”
At just 18, Luke Littler is already rewriting darts history. After storming to the 2025 world title, he enters this championship as the heavy favourite. Littler has spoken about feeling “unbeatable” after success on his summer tour in Australia and New Zealand, and bookmakers reflect his dominance with the shortest odds to defend his crown. His youthful energy and fearless performances have given darts a cultural spark dubbed the “Littler effect”.
Luke Humphries – the formidable rival
World No. 1 Luke Humphries remains one of the most consistent players on the circuit. Having collected the Premier League and World Matchplay titles, Humphries is Littler’s most likely challenger, with fans eager for another showdown between the pair. His calm presence and clinical finishing make him one of the toughest opponents in the game.
Michael van Gerwen – the veteran powerhouse
Three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen is determined to reclaim the Sid Waddell Trophy after finishing runner-up in the 2025 final. With unrivalled experience on the Ally Pally stage, the Dutchman is always capable of producing title-winning form when it matters most.
The dark horses
Several big names are waiting to spring surprises. Former world champions Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson remain dangerous contenders, while young talents like Josh Rock and Callan Rydz bring energy and fearless play. Stephen Bunting, meanwhile, continues to impress with strong performances in recent tournaments.
What makes this edition so exciting?
This World Championship is not just another tournament—it marks a turning point in darts history.
- An expanded 128-player draw: For the first time, 128 competitors will feature in a Wimbledon-style format. The top 32 players are seeded, while others are drawn randomly, adding unpredictability from the very first round.
- Record-breaking prize money: The total prize fund reaches £5 million, with the winner receiving £1 million—double that of previous years. This makes the championship one of the most lucrative events in world sport.
- Generational clash: The storylines are irresistible—teenage sensation Littler versus established champions like Humphries and van Gerwen. It’s a battle between the sport’s future and its legends.
- Global momentum: With darts growing rapidly worldwide, this edition is expected to draw record audiences both in person and on screen, cementing the sport’s place on the global stage.
