Europa League Group Stage

Europa League Groups

The Europa League group stage is complete and the groups' final standings are confirmed.

The three Premier League representatives in the competition, West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool, were drawn in competitive groups, but all came out on top of their respective tables which automatically qualified them for the round of sixteen.

West Ham, who qualified for the competition after winning last season’s Europa Conference League, secured qualification with five wins from six games. Goals from Mohammed Kudus and Edson Álvarez confirmed The Hammers’ massive place in the last sixteen with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over SC Freiburg. West Ham will now be playing SC Freiburg again in the Europa League last-16.

Brighton, who are taking part in their first-ever European campaign, secured qualification for the competition after a successful 2022/23 Premier League campaign - finishing sixth.

The Seagulls eased their way into the last sixteen at the top spot of Group B, finishing above 1994 Champions League winners, Marseille after a 1-0 home victory against the French side.

European heavyweights Liverpool faced an arguably easier group than both West Ham and Brighton, but managed to make it a little more difficult to secure their top spot in Group E - Following on from two losses to Belgian side, Union Saint-Gilloise and French outfit, Toulouse.

European heavyweights Liverpool faced an arguably easier group than both West Ham and Brighton, but managed to make it a little more difficult to secure their top spot in Group E - Following on from two losses to Belgian side, Union Saint-Gilloise and French outfit, Toulouse.

Despite these two losses, Liverpool topped Group E and the six-time European Champions will surely be favourites to go all the way.

Scottish Premier League side, Rangers, also qualified at the top of their group, fending off stiff competition from Sparta Prague, Real Betis, and Aris Limassol.

Rangers, who recently won the Scottish League Cup, were part of one of the most tightly contested groups, edging their way into the top spot just one point ahead of Sparta Prague, following 3 wins, 2 draws, and one loss.

All four British teams progressed directly into the round of sixteen and avoided the play-off round against third-placed Champions League opposition. The round of sixteen matches were played across two legs on 7th and 14th March.
