Indie sleaze is back in a big way in 2024 - and it's not just a fashion trend. Bands like Bloc Party celebrated their 20th anniversary with a massive show at Crystal Palace Park, and The Enemy, The Subways, and The Holloways are gearing up for an 'Indie Til I Die' package tour this autumn.

Whether the revival is just a Gen Z TikTok trend or a nostalgia-fest for those who were there, the resurgence of noughties indie rock music has been warmly welcomed.

Despite the prevalence of one-hit wonders and generic guitar-based bands within the genre, Courteeners have proven themselves to be anything but 'landfill indie.'

From chart-topping albums to huge headline shows, the Manchester band's success has saved them from succumbing to the post-2010 supposed demise of guitar music.

Formed in 2006 by school friends Liam Fray, Daniel 'Conan' Moores, Michael Campbell and ex-band member Mark Cuppello, the band were inspired by Mancunian icons Oasis. They released their debut album 'St. Jude' in 2008 and have gone on to release six UK Top 10 albums.

The band announced their seventh studio album, 'Pink Cactus Café', on social media along with their latest single 'Solitude of the Night Bus'. They also confirmed their upcoming UK tour set to be announced this Friday.

Are Courteeners releasing a new album?

According to a press release shared with NME, The Courteeners' seventh studio album, 'Pink Cactus Café', is set to release on Friday 25th October.

Their new single, 'Solitude of the Night Bus', harks back to the band's indie roots and has already generated much buzz for the upcoming album.

Speaking about the song, lead singer Liam Fray stated, “This came at a time of real questioning. Things weren’t going particularly well. No confidence. No direction. I think that’s why – whisper it – it’s on the fun side. This is the new us. I’d previously worked with Ola [Modupe-Ojo] on ‘Hanging Off Your Cloud’ and, like then, there was just a magic in the room that was irresistible."

He continued: “It’s a summer breeze. But it’s a winter’s night. Either way, sometimes you have to block out the noise. My late Uncle Pat loved a whistle so it’s a bit of a homage to him. Get on the bus; headphones in; go your own way. It’s the feel good, imposter syndrome hit of the summer.”

Fray also co-produced all tracks on the album, which will feature a host of collaborations including Brooke Combe, The DMA's, James and Ian Skelley from The Coral, Pixey, Charlie Salt from Blossoms, Ola Modupe-Ojo from Bipolar Sunshine, and Theo Hutchcraft from Hurts, among others.

'Pink Cactus Café' Tracklist:

  1. 'Sweet Surrender' feat. Brooke Combe
  2. 'Weekend Shy of a Feeling'
  3. 'Pink Cactus Cafe'
  4. 'The Beginning of the End feat. DMA's
  5. 'Solitude of the Night Bus'
  6. 'First Name Terms' feat. Pixey
  7. 'Lu Lu'
  8. 'Love You Any Less'
  9. 'Bitten By Unseen Teeth'

When did Courteeners last tour the UK?

The band last hit the road across the UK on their 2021 ‘The Whites of Their Eyes’ tour, a nine-show intimate concert hall tour in celebration of the 15th anniversary of their first-ever live gig at Manchester Roadhouse.

The tour kicked off on the 15th of November at the Engine Shed in Lincoln and finished with a hometown show at the Manchester O2 Victoria Warehouse on the 27th of November.

The band was supported by Vistas across all tour dates and Brooke Coombe for their London shows. The tour was a follow on from the band's previous September tour in the same year that saw them play gigs at O2 Academy, Leicester, Victoria Hall, Stoke and a monster hometown gig at Manchester’s Emirates Old Trafford.

Their Manchester show saw fifty thousand fans fill the iconic grounds to witness the gig that sold out in a matter of hours. From this point on, Courteeners had certified their status as indie heroes.

When and where are the Courteeners touring in the UK?

Since Courteeners' last tour, the 'Not Nineteen Forever' indie rockers have become regulars on the festival circuit.

In 2024 alone, they have already performed at Lytham Festival and TRNSMT Festival, and have upcoming slots at Boardmasters and Victorious Festival in August.

Courteeners have announced their highly anticipated UK tour for 2024 in support of their brand-new album, 'Pink Cactus Café'.

The tour dates include stops at Manchester's Co-op Live, Brixton O2 Academy, First Direct Arena in Leeds, Utilita Arena Cardiff, and Utilita Arena Birmingham this November.
