Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo that formed in 2009. The band was formed in Columbus, Ohio, by lead vocalist Tyler Joseph along with Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, who both left in 2011. Since their departure, the line-up has consisted of Joseph and drummer Josh Dun.
They are known for their eclectic style blending alternative rock, hip-hop, and electropop genres. Some of their most popular songs include "Stressed Out," "Ride," and "Heathens". The duo has released several albums, including their debut self-titled album "Twenty One Pilots" and their breakthrough album "Blurryface" in 2015, which became the first album ever to have every track certified Gold or higher by the RIAA.
In 2021 they released their sixth studio album, "Scaled and Icy," which features the hit single "Shy Away".
Meaning behind the name
The band's name is said to have been inspired by an Arthur Miller play called "All My Sons," which features a character who allows a shipment of faulty aeroplane parts to be sent out, resulting in the death of several pilots, hence "twenty-one pilots".
