About England Cricket at The Oval

First Test at The Oval: 1880

Historic rivalry: England v Australia – The Ashes

Famous England players associated with Oval Tests: W.G. Grace, Len Hutton, Ian Botham, Alastair Cook, James Anderson and Stuart Broad

The Oval has played an important role in the development of international cricket in England. It staged England's first home Test match in 1880, when W.G. Grace made 152 against Australia, and the ground has continued to host some of the national team's most significant matches.

Its strongest historical association is with the Ashes. Australia's victory at the ground in 1882 inspired the newspaper notice from which the series eventually took its name, establishing The Oval as the birthplace of cricket's most famous rivalry.

England have since produced many notable performances at the venue. Len Hutton's 364 against Australia in 1938 remains one of the most celebrated Test innings played at the ground, helping England to 903/7 declared.

The venue also provided the setting for the conclusion of the 2005 Ashes, when England secured the draw they needed to regain the urn, and for Stuart Broad's final international appearance during the 2023 Ashes.

That history makes England Cricket at The Oval an excellent day out for dedicated supporters, families, groups of friends and corporate guests. Hospitality allows you to enjoy the occasion with additional comfort while remaining close to the atmosphere around the ground.

An England international at The Oval combines the atmosphere of a major sporting occasion with the traditions of one of cricket's best-known grounds.

Test matches provide a full day to enjoy the cricket, hospitality and conversation around the game, while ODIs and T20 internationals offer a faster pace and plenty of attacking play.
